Man killed near Stratosphere

A murder suspect remained at large today after a weekend killing near the Stratosphere Tower.

Metro Police have not commented on a possible motive for the slaying, which occurred about 12:30 a.m. Sunday. Patrol officers responding to a call of gunshots found the victim dead outside an apartment complex at 1800 Fairfield Avenue, near Chicago Avenue, said homicide Lt. Wayne Petersen.

The victim, 29-year-old Edwin Lopez, died from multiple gunshot wounds.

In a separate shooting at 30th Street and Bonanza Road, police have withheld the name of a man who nearly shot another man to death during a dispute police believe was over money.

The victim was found about 3 p.m. Sunday on the floor of an apartment at 2909 Siki Court, near Bonanza and Mojave roads.

The victim was taken to University Medical Center, where he underwent surgery and was listed in critical condition but expected to live, said homicide Sgt. Kevin Manning.

A patrol officer located the suspect in Freedom Park, where he was arrested without incident, Manning said. Police believe he may be an undocumented alien.
