The 16th annual Lenten Desert Experience will keep a vigil at the Nevada Test Site through Easter to protest subcritical experiments expected this year at the nuclear weapons site 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas.
"Rebound," the first subcritical experiment, has been ready for countdown since last summer. About once a week, a "dry run" is conducted in preparation for an explosion underground.
"These underground tests are contrary to the spirit of the recently signed Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty," said Marylia Kelley, president of California's Tri-Valley CARES, a group demonstrating against nuclear weapons and nuclear waste.
