The reason for the growth in election costs is that the elections have become a TV event instead of a grass roots event, as formerly. This has forced candidates to spend atrocious amounts of money to compete. Therefore, isn't the TV/advertising industry the real villain in this scandal?
One campaign reform could be for the GOP and Democratic parties to limit TV ads and for the TV/Advertising industry to provide free time for the candidates. Happy dreaming.
