Transportation hearing scheduled for Las Vegas

A U.S. Senate subcommittee has scheduled a field hearing on transportation needs in the Las Vegas Valley.

The hearing is set for March 28 in Las Vegas. Further details have not been finalized.

The Senate Environment and Public Works transportation subcommittee agreed to a request from Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., to hold the field hearing on the massive highway bill known as the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act, or ISTEA.

ISTEA is a bill allocating federal highway funds to states. Reid, who played a role in writing the first ISTEA bill in 1991, requested the hearing to ensure that Nevada's interests will be protected as the second bill is drafted.

"With our high growth, high percentage of federal lands and high degree of cooperation between federal, state and local officials on transportation issues facing the valley, we need this hearing in Las Vegas to help me make our case and show my colleagues firsthand what we are facing."

Nevada's wish list includes funding for the widening of U.S. 95 through the northwest valley, a Strip monorail system and expansion of the Citizens Area Transit bus system.
