* HELP THE Y -- The YMCA of Southern Nevada has kicked off its annual Current Support Campaign. The goal of the five-week campaign is $130,000. As a nonprofit organization and a United Way agency, the YMCA relies on all funds raised in the campaign to support YMCA programs for youths, families, seniors and adults. All contributions go to the YMCA's work in Southern Nevada. Brochures and pledge forms may be obtained by calling 877-9622.

* ART AUCTION -- One of the many fund-raisers the Junior Mesquite Club undertakes is an annual art auction. This year's art auction, on March 15 at UNLV's Richard Tam Alumni Center, will benefit Child Haven. The preview will be from 6-7 p.m., followed by the live auction, which includes a variety of locally produced art. Meet the artists and enjoy complimentary champagne during the preview. No-host cocktails and complimentary hors d'oeuvres will be served throughout the evening. Admission at the door will be $10, which includes a Mark Vranesh commemorative T-shirt for the first 150 guests.

* MARCH FOR PARKS -- On March 15, Death Valley National Park will be hosting the second annual "March for Parks," an event sponsored by the National Parks & Conservation Association and dedicated to the improvement of facilities and activities for disabled visitors. Participants will show their support by walking a short distance on a paved route through a scenic part of Death Valley. Proceeds from the event will be used to develop a wheelchair accessible native plant trail at Furnace Creek Visitor Visitor Center. The event will begin at 10 a.m. in the parking lot at Golden Canyon located three miles south of Furnace Creek Ranch in the central part of Death Valley. * NEW YORK STYLE PARTY -- A benefit of Soap Stars Saving Lives for United Blood Services will be 7 p.m. April 5 at the New York-New York hotel-casino. Tickets are $50 in advance and $75 at the door which includes a "New York Style Party." Requests for tickets through the mail must be received by April 1. Send check or money order, along with a self-addressed stamped envelope to United Blood Services, Attention: Community Relations, 6930 W. Charleston Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89117. Tickets also are available at all three United Blood Services locations in Las Vegas. Individuals who donate blood will receive $10 off the ticket price. Stars scheduled to appear are Sean Kanan, John Ingle and Steve Burton from General Hospital; Kimberlin Brown from the Bold and the Beautiful; Jason Brooks, Pat Delaney and Stephanie Cameron from Days of our Lives; Kelley Menighan-Hensley, Allyson Rice-Taylor and Jon Hensley from As the World Turns; and Kate Linder and John Castellanos from The Young and the Restless. * EVENING AT STARLIGHT EXPRESS -- On April 12, the Las Vegas Hilton is sponsoring an "Evening at Starlight Express" for Community Action Against Rape. This fund-raising event includes the 7:30 p.m. performance of "Starlight Express" followed by a gourmet reception featuring international pastries, coffees and liqueurs with a silent auction. Funds raised will be used to help child and adult victims of sexual assault. Tickets are $25. For more information or reservations, call CAAR, 385-2153. Reservation deadline is April 9.

* TOUR DE CURE '97 -- The local chapter of the American Diabetes Association's annual bicycle ride, "Tour de Cure '97," will be May 3. The tour will begin and end at Bruce Trent Park, the corner of Vegas Drive and Rampart Boulevard. Three routes will be offered: 25K (15 miles), 50K (31 miles) and, for the serious rider, the 100K (62 miles). Early registration fee is $15. All riders are asked to raise a minimum of $75 in pledges. * BOWL FOR KIDS' SAKE -- NevTEL's Bowl for Kids' Sake to benefit Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Southern Nevada will be April 26-27 at the Santa Fe Bowling Center, 4949 N. Rancho Drive, and Sunset Lanes, 4451 E. Sunset Blvd. Last year's Bowl for Kids' Sake raised more than $50,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada, which matches children from single-parent families with a special role model. This year's goal is to raise more than $70,000 with the help of more than 1,000 league and amateur bowlers. Call the Bowl for Kids' Sake hotline at 731-9952 to register. Each participant needs to gather pledges of at least $25. All bowlers with a minimum pledge bowl two free games and receive gifts and free food.

Special needs

* CARS FOR A CURE -- The American Cancer Society wants your car, truck, RV, boat or motorcycle. It's all part of the organization's "Cars for a Cure Campaign." The donated cars are sold at wholesale auctions, with proceeds directly benefiting the American Cancer Society's lifesaving program and services. To donate your "wheels," call 798-6877.

* DONATIONS SOUGHT -- Donations of used adaptive equipment are being sought by Nevada Community Enrichment Program's Assistive Technology Center for its new Assistive Technology Recycling Program. Motorized wheelchairs, scooters, computers, augmentative communication devices, environmental control units, electronic vision aids and similar life-enhancing devices are among those being requested. The goal of the program is to provide greater access to these costly items, particularly for low-income or financially overburdened individuals or families who would otherwise be unable to obtain it. * BEAR HUGS -- Operation Hug, a philanthropic project of Assistance League of Las Vegas, provides teddy bears to comfort children traumatized by fires, accident or domestic violence. These bears are being distributed through many law enforcement and firefighting agencies. To date, more than 4,000 bears have helped comfort children in our community. * WHEELCHAIRS NEEDED -- The Artie J. Cannon Helping Hands of Henderson operates a loan closet of durable medical equipment. The need for wheelchairs has left its closet empty. Helping Hands is a volunteer organization that assists seniors and disabled, primarily in providing rides for doctor appointments, therapy sessions and shopping. Anyone wishing to donate items of durable medical equipment or who is interested in volunteering can call Christine Nelson, 558-4808. Items can be dropped off at the office, in the St. Rose Dominican Medical Plaza Building at 98 E. Lake Mead Drive, Suite 105, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Arrangements can also be made for volunteers to pick up items.

Volunteers

* PEDIATRIC AIDS -- Reach Out, a nonprofit pediatric AIDS organization offering day care and a learning center, needs volunteers for fund-raising, special events, bulk mail and day-care workers who will work one-on-one with children in the day-care center. Only day-care workers need a sheriff's card and a child-care health card. Also needed is a volunteer social worker with a bachelor's degree and a volunteer coordinator. * REACH OUT CENTER -- The Las Vegas-based Reach Out Center, which helps children afflicted with the HIV virus, is seeking transportation support from the Southern Nevada community to allow more children and their families access to the center. With plans for expansion this year, the center, 1522 Pinto Lane, is looking for van-type transportation to increase its service to the 80 children it accommodates on a daily basis.
