Showboat Invitational: Bohn takes bumps, lumps

For everything Parker Bohn III has accomplished in bowling, there still are some things he would like to add to his r'esum'e before his career is over.

One probably would be to win a major championship.

The other would be to be named player of the year.

"I have a competitiveness. I want to win every week, like everyone else," said Bohn, the world's third-ranked player who is in 18th place after two rounds of the 38th annual Showboat Invitational. "But, you have to take the bumps with the lumps."

Bohn last week won the AC Delco Classic in Lakewood, Calif., his first victory on television in 13 tries. Bohn, always one of the PBA Tour's most consistent players, had gone through a dry spell on TV.

His previous win, in Austin, Texas, in 1995, came at the expense of fellow left-hander Jason Couch. Bohn's win last Saturday also was against Couch, whom he defeated 238-234 in the final after striking out in the 10th frame.

For Couch, the irony was even thicker than usual, because he is Bohn's roomate on tour.

Bohn has won 11 titles in 13 seasons and has surpassed $100,000 in earnings seven times.

"I have a new goal," Bohn said. "I want to figure out how to get to $200,000."

Only $163,750 to go.

Look who's on top

It didn't take long for the world's best bowler -- and the defending Showboat champion -- to emerge as the player to beat this week.

Walter Ray Williams, Jr., averaged 248.1 in his eight-game block Tuesday and charged into the lead by 103 pins over Bob Benoit of Topeka, Kan. Williams, who has knocked down 3,892 pins, was sixth after the first round, Benoit ninth.

The top five is rounded out by Rick Easley of Van Nuys, Calif., Tim Criss of Bel Air, Md., and Atlanta's Brian Voss.

The biggest move made Tuesday was by Mark Williams. The Beaumont, Texas, native leaped from 56th to 10th place.

First-round leader Rick Steelsmith toppled to 23rd after averaging just 202 on Tuesday.
