John McCarron: Hal Wilber takes Orleans tourney

HAL WILBER won the WildDOG Match Point Tournament at the Orleans Bowling Center with a fine total of 1376 and 52 points. Wilber won $500, barley beating out Orleans manager Mike Monyak ($350, 1371) 219-215.

Other top places went to Bob McDonough (1306, $300), Derek Masek (1306, $255), Tim Schwerdfeger (1399, $150), Bob Barnowsky (1326, $100) and Rick Benard (1312, $75). John Cocchi was the Orleans Skins game winner, pocketing $120. High game went to Mark Blue with a 289.

The tournament provided an 87-percent payback of the entry fees and contributed $100 to the year-end Nevada Tournament Bowlers Alliance (NTBA) Grand Championship prize fund. For more information regarding the NTBA call Bart di Bartolo at 451-7474.

Salas is golden

Paul Salas became the first two-time Mahoney's Match Play tournament winner, beating tough lefty Robert Rivas in the championship match 231-219. Taking third was defending champion Dave Gibbs with fourth going to steady Freddie Allens.

Other top places: Garry Griffin, Ryan Bowman, Chris Snipes, Bert Cordiero Jr., John Marshall, Trish Marshall and Neal Bowman.

Senior scratch

The Senior Scratch Bowlers Tour event at Sam's Town was won by veteran John Cocchi (1126, 268, $310). Cocchi, the all-time leader with 14 titles, made a clean sweep, winning singles and teaming with Ki Koy to win doubles. Gerald Baird (1104, $160) took second.

Other top finishers included Don Rocarek (1059, $125), Charles Edwards (1058, $105), Marty Boyle (1042, $90), Lee Lamont (1037, $75), Ki Koy (1013, $65), Joe Gentile (999, $50), Tony Marine (996, $45) and Vaughn Doody (993, $40). The super senior winner was A.J. Morrisette (988, $40). The next SSBT event is set for 10 a.m. March 23rd at The Orleans Call Gary Walters at 464-8466 for details.

Gold Coast

Mark Blue took first place ($160) at the weekly Gold Coast Shootout. Blue's 222 overcame Yee Zhu (214, $100) and Chris Schwartz (188, $75).
