Satellite firm gets NTS nod

The U.S. Department of Energy has agreed to allow Kistler Aerospace Corp. to locate a satellite launch operation at the Nevada Test Site, if the Federal Aviation Administration licenses it.

The DOE and the Nevada Test Site Development Corp. have worked together to find suitable places on the site, 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, for Kistler Aerospace to use. The current plan has the launch area in the northwest area.

"The Test Site has unique advantages that make it an excellent place from which to launch satellites," said Terry Vaeth, acting manager of the DOE's Nevada Operations Office. "It's remote and open range, it's secure, it has restricted air space and has protected altitude."

George Mueller, Kistler Aerospace chief executive officer, said the siting agreement was an important step "in our quest to become the UPS of space transportation."
