Where You Stand for March 12, 1997

I'm shocked at the laws of Nevada. I just read the article on the 9-year-old boy who was arrested for writing his name in cement. He was arrested without his mother knowing about this and subjected to a strip search. What kind of laws does this state have? It's ridiculous. The child is a minor. He doesn't know what's going on. Something needs to be done about this.

I wish to comment on this Jeremy Anderson. This 9-year-old kid was arrested in school for writing in name in wet cement. What I would like to say is I'm from Rochester, N.Y., originally, and when they lay wet cement -- like 300 feet of wet cement -- they cover it with boards so that young kids or anybody else don't think they're on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The builder is negligent. He didn't cover his wet cement with boards. This is what caused the trouble.

I'm calling about Jeremy writing on the sidewalk. Just what does the mother think would be fair and equitable compensation to the developer for her son damaging the cement since she doesn't feel she should paying the $11,000? I think she should have some ideas how she would like to see that resolved. What are her comments as far as that? He did deface the property and something should be done.

I'm calling regarding Sen. Frank Murkowski from Alaska and Sen. Larry Craig from Idaho regarding the nuclear waste bill. I think we should encourage all Nevada people to wire them or write them both and ask them to put it in their own states instead of ours.

I'm calling in regard to the boy who was arrested for writing his name on the sidewalk. I'm reading here that it's supposed to cost $10,300 to fix it. If it costs $10,300 to pop out a piece of sidewalk and pour a bag of cement back in there, I'm in the wrong business. I need to go into sidewalk pouring.

I've been in Las Vegas for 10 months; this is definitely the state of opportunity. Forget Arkansas. Since I've been here I've had six jobs of my choice. I've had interviews with Metro, the county, the state. I may not have gotten jobs but I'm getting more interviews than I ever had for the past 10 years in Pennsylvania. Plus the weather's great, the people are nicer and the housing is cheaper.

Jeremy's mother does not get my public sympathy. Where was she when Jeremy was writing his name in the sidewalk? Why hasn't the coward stepped forward who gave Jeremy permission to write in the sidewalk? Parents, listen up. You have a responsibility to teach your child right from wrong. I think $11,000 is an awful lot of money, but I do believe that parents always shoulder the burden of responsibility for their children's actions and for their own actions.
