Clark County Programs

Clark County Parks & Recreation will be offering classes and activities this spring and summer. It accepts payments on any of the classes or activities that cost more than $50. The following is a list of classes and activities that will be offered. For more information, call 455-8289.

PRIVATE PILOT GROUND SCHOOL -- This class will prepare you for the Private Pilot Written Test. You will learn aerodynamics, safety, weather, airplane parts radio communications, navigation, flight preparation and actual flight. This 24-hour class is taught by FAA certified instructors. It will meet on eight events for three hours each time. Fulfill your dream of flying for $130 plus $117.70 for the Cessna Pilot Kit. This class will be offered in April and again in July.

SCUBA DIVING -- The $135 fee includes instruction and equipment. Completing the class means certification as an NAUI Open Water Diver, which allows you to rent equipment at more than 4,000 dive locations worldwide. This class will only be offered once this summer starting in July. Enrollment is limited to 14 people.

BEGINNING SAILING -- During this seven-hour class, you will learn seamanship, ropes and knots, basic boat handling and marine safety. The hands-on sailing portion will be aboard a Hunter 28 at Lake Mead. The fee for the class is $70 and includes everything, including lunch. Classes will be offered in March, April and again in May.

DESERT SURVIVAL -- This three-hour class should be taken by everyone that lives in the desert, especially those who hike, mountain bike, camp or drive in the desert. You will learn about shelter, fire building, use of signaling devices, etc. The fee for this class is $20 and includes everything. Classes will be offered on April 8, June 21 and July 24.

FENCING -- The instruction covers foil and saber in this five-week class, which meets once a week for two hours. The class is instructed by a master fencer, with more than 12 years of experience. The $25 fee includes all equipment required. Classes will be offered March 19 to April 23, another session will be June 18-July 23.

GOLD PROSPECTING -- Learn how to recognize gold, how to understand and read topographical maps, how to read rocks and be aware of geological features, how to use and understand prospecting equipment such as dry washers, wet washers, metal detectors and gold pans, and what to buy. The fee is $10. Classes will be offered on May 22, June 26 and July 24.

TRAP SHOOTING -- Learn to shoot trap from the best, a seven-time North American champion. In the course you will be taught basic safety procedures, fundamentals and technique and field etiquette. The fee for this course is $35, and includes 50 rounds of shooting, targets, gun rental, and eye and ear protection.

GEOLOGY OF SOUTHERN NEVADA -- The strata around Las Vegas have a long story to tell, spanning over 600 million years of the Earth's past and including all major divisions of geologic time. On field trips you will experience ancient tropical lagoons, sandy beaches and lush swamps. The trips will be close to Las Vegas and will be based around established trails. The fee is $20. The class will be offered in April and June.

ARCHERY -- This class will cover all styles of archery from beginning to advanced. Children will be taught based on the Junior Olympic Program, and can start as early as age 7. The adult class will teach all levels of shooting. Both classes will cover basic target shooting, three D shooting and FITA shooting. The $15 fee includes all equipment needed. Classes will be offered on March 26, May 21 and July 22.

FOSSIL HUNTING -- Learn where to find fossils, how to identify them and the types of environments that they originally lived in. You will also get to take a trip to a fossil site and study them firsthand. The fee is $20. Class sessions will be offered on April 18 and 19 and June 12 and 14. Classes are two hours in class and four hours in field study.

HORSEBACK RIDING -- In this three-hour class you will learn the fundamentals of pleasure riding. The class will cover saddling, care and grooming and correctly communicating your commands to the horse. You will also learn how to properly mount and set the horse. The class will end with a guided two-hour ride through the La Madre Mountains. The fee for this class is $35. Class sessions will be offered on March 22, April 19, May 17 and June 21.

ROCK CLIMBING -- This class will be taught at Rocks and Ropes, a full-service indoor climbing gym. Instruction will cover care and handling of equipment, belaying techniques, basic climbing techniques and know craft. The fee for the eight-hour class that will be held over two four-hour sessions is $30 and includes everything. This class will be offered in March and again in May.

BACKPACKING SKILLS -- This three-hour class will teach you everything that you will need to know to safely hike in the back country. You will be taught how to select equipment, how to plan and prepare your foods, basic survival skills, topographical map reading and first aid. This is a must for anyone planning a back country trip. The fee for the class is $20. Classes will be offered on April 10 and June 5.

CAMPING SKILLS -- This three-hour class is excellent for anyone who would like to learn to camp in comfort. You will learn how to select equipment, and what equipment you will need. You will also learn how to prepare for your trip, build a campfire and basic camp cookery. The class will also cover some of the great places to camp in our area, and what is available once you get there. The fee is $20. The class will be offered on May 8 and June 19.

LAND NAVIGATION -- Being able to navigate on land, is an extremely important skill for hikers, mountain bikers, hunters, scouts and campers. During this intensive beginning course, you will learn how to read and understand topographical maps and properly use a compass. In class you will be experience in finding points on a map, extracting coordinates, and plotting azimuths. Bring your compass, paper, a pen and protractor. The fee for this three-hour class is $20. This class will be offered in April and June.

FLY TIEING -- In this class you will learn to make your own lures for fishing. You'll learn what attracts fish, and specifically what attracts the type of fish that you want to catch. The fee is $20. Class sessions will be offered in April, June and August.

NATURE, THE ENVIRONMENT AND YOU -- This class will be centered around hikes, led by a member of the Sierra Club and the Nevada Trail Patrol, to some of the most interesting areas in Southern Nevada. The fee is $20. Class sessions will be offered on April 8, June 21 and July 24.

NATIVE PLANT IDENTIFICATION -- In classroom study and on field trips, you will learn to identify and collect native plants. You will also be taught the parts of plants and what they are used for. The fee is $20. Class sessions will be offered in April, May and June.

NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY -- In this class you will learn how to select equipment, choose a subject, use F-stops, select film and learn how to lay out your shot. You will learn the differences between types of film and film speeds. You will also learn how to use filters and different types of lenses. This is a great class for outdoor enthusiasts, and the fee is $20. Class sessions will be offered in April, June and August.

STRIPER FISHING -- This basic class will cover such topics as the history of the striper in Lake Mead and Lake Mohave, including where the threadfin shad came from. You will learn what tackle to choose for both shore and boat fishing, how to locate the stripers, including popular fishing holes, other fish species in the lakes, and fishing ethics. You will also learn how to clean and fillet your catch. The fee is $20. Class sessions will be offered on April 5, May 18 and June 14.

TROUT FISHING -- Learn the logic and luck of trout fishing. The class will cover such topics as choosing tackle, bait vs. lures (which to choose), how to locate the best fishing areas and when's the best time to fish. The class will also cover the different ways to catch trout (conventional spinning rods vs. fly rods), and how to clean and prepare your catch. The fee is $20. Class sessions will be held on April 12 and May 10.

CHILDREN'S GUN SAFETY -- This National Rifle Association's two-hour class is taught by a peace officer and firearms trainer who has more than 10 years experience teaching children. Kids will be taught what to do if they find a weapon or see another child or adult with a weapon. This class doesn't involve the child using or holding a weapon. It is strictly a safety class. The fee is $10 and includes everything that is needed. Classes will be held in March, May and June.

PERSONAL SAFETY AWARENESS -- This two-evening six-hour multimedia seminar presentation will explain to the participants the practical application of firearms, impact tools, chemical agent (pepper spray) martial-arts training and noise defense in personal safety and protection. No-nonsense training style by an instructor who is a peace officer, martial arts black belt, firearms trainer and former bodyguard with more than 10 years experience in training. The fee class is $25. Classes will be held in April and June.
