The body of Terre N. Lee, 49, was found Thursday by the manager of the Tahoe Racquet Club. The manager went to check on the woman after a friend reported not having seen her for several days.
Detectives said Lee had listed her occupation as a prostitute at the Mustang II brothel east of Reno when she filed a 1993 crime report.
That report alleged someone had used her telephone to make four calls to a 900 number at a cost of $127.
No suspects were ever developed in that case.
Sheriff's Sgt. Mark Caldwell said Lee suffered trauma to her upper body. Investigators determined her death was unnatural, but Caldwell said suicide had not been ruled out.
An autopsy was pending.
