Trooper Steve Harney said the trooper, whose name was not released, had made a traffic stop on northbound I-15 when two cars pulled up behind his vehicle Friday.
Harney said that while the officer completed the paperwork for the stop shortly after 8:20 p.m., a man left one vehicle and a woman left the other.
As the trooper started to approach the two, the woman shot the man in the stomach with a handgun, Harney said. The trooper, who was not injured, took the woman, Linda Carbary, 33, into custody and called for an ambulance.
The victim was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Investigators were examining the possibility that the shooting was sparked by a domestic dispute.
