Agency recovers more than $563,000 in ill-gotten jobless benefits

ESD investigators spotted fraud in nearly 1,200 UI claims, won three convictions in courts, and referred 162 of the cases for civil action.

Penalties for UI fraud can include a year-long disqualification from further benefits, repayment of illegally obtained money, fines, lengthy probation and even jail terms.

The ESD has fraud investigators based in Carson City, with investigative units in northern and southern Nevada.

Investigators were able to use a new computer program last year to cross-match people getting jobless benefits with those being paid wages by Nevada employers or getting State Industrial Insurance System benefits.

"As technology advances, our potential to detect fraud is greatly enhanced, making our investigations more scientific - and therefore more productive," said Carol Jackson, director of the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation which oversees the ESD.
