Faces charges of coercing sex from prostitutes

Arthur Sewall, 30, sent a letter of resignation Monday afternoon.

His attorney, Clarence Gamble, said Sewall did not want to force the department to have to go through the process of firing him.

Sewall was arrested in early February after a 36-year-old woman told police he threatened her with arrest if she did not perform a sexual act.

He was released on bail, then arrested again after another woman came forward with a similar story.

Sewall has pleaded innocent to two counts of kidnapping, three counts of sexual assault and three counts of oppression under the color of office.

Trial is scheduled for June 9.
