Barbara's position that "my son has done nothing wrong" reflects problems and shortcomings in the way she was probably raised. Her attempts to condemn society's authority disclose her gullible, self-centered and incompetent deduction and faulty reasoning of a very simple situation.
A 9-year-old child should know right from wrong. If not, it is not the child's fault but the parent(s). A child merely reflects what he has learned or not learned in the home, school and church. When it's lacking, society deals with incorrigible, outcast, deviant behavior by activating police, mental hospitals, prisons, etc., to bring the stray back into what is normality and reality. Only then can we all enjoy life to its fullest in the pursuit of peace and happiness.
What is wrong with this picture, people? Leave the imp alone. Go for the gusto! Get the devil itself. Besides, her son is needed for decades to come. He is job security for the police, courts and prison system.
