City-county tensions scrap tax cut

The plan has been put on hold indefinitely by the Clark County Commission, a sign of renewed tensions between city and county officials.

Las Vegas city councilman Matthew Callister says he's puzzled by the turn of events and doesn't know why the county has backed down on the plan.

City and county officials said in January that they had "agreed to agree" on a plan that would cut taxes of city residents by some $125 a year.

The city has been fighting for the cut, saying city residents pay more in property taxes than residents of the county.

But the proposed cut could mean county taxpayers would have to pick up the difference, costing some as much as $72 a year.

County commissioner Lorraine Hunt has stated she opposes the plan, saying the county shouldn't subsidize the city's "excessive spending habits."
