Peter Benton: Wedding of local golfers was moving

DURING THE 21 years of this column's existence, I have had the privilege of meeting, and in many instances, befriending, some incredibly pleasant and personable people on the golf scene.

It has also been my pleasure to have witnessed legendary golfers such as Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus compete against each other in the PGA Tour's old Sahara Invitational (now the Las Vegas Invitational). I have watched with awe the amazing growth of the Senior Tour and reveled in the fact that the LPGA Tour returned to our fair city. Las Vegas has the distinction of being the only city which hosts the three major golf tours and most certainly classifies as a golfing mecca.

But one of my biggest thrills, and by far the most moving experience, was attending the wedding last week of Zachary Armijo and Mikelene Welch.

Zachary, son of Anthony and Cynthia Armijo, is an aspiring young professional out at Desert Willow who is looking to make his mark in the golf world.

Mikelene (Miki to her family and friends), the daughter of Don and the always effervescent Peggy Welch, has been employed in the Spanish Trail pro shop for the past six years.

Don, one of the most respected and revered professionals in our state, was the former director of golf at Desert Inn Country Club prior to taking a similar position at the Dunes Golf Club in 1977 (until its demise). He is now based at the new Desert Pines layout.

In my 60-plus years (including eight years of world travel) and having attended weddings too numerous to remember, it is difficult for me to recall a more poignant service, such an elegant bridal entourage or a couple so completely suited to each other.

It would be trite to say the bride was beautiful or radiant. That was not quite the case in this instance, as Miki surpassed both these superlatives. She was absolutely, positively, exquisite.

On behalf of the entire golfing community, we wish bride and groom good health and much happiness.

Scott Lewis, superintendent of golf course maintenance at SouthShore Golf Club at Lake Las Vegas Resort, was recently named Superintendent of the Year for the 138 Jack Nicklaus-designed courses as well as golf courses managed by the Nicklaus golf course maintenance company, Golf Turf.

"I think Scott is more than deserving of this prestigious award," said Harry Turner, vice president of operations at Lake Las Vegas Resort. "The honor says a lot about Scott's talent and ability and it is nice to see him recognized by his peers. It also speaks volumes about the talents of his first class staff."

In his role as superintendent of golf course maintenance, Lewis is in charge of the course condition and maintenance of the Jack Nicklaus signature golf course at SouthShore Golf Club.

The course, which opened for in December 1995, also has been recognized by Golf Digest as one of the country's top-10 new private golf courses.
