School reopens after problem with asbestos

Lincoln Elementary School reopened its doors today after a one-day precautionary closure while workers cleaned up insulation that contained asbestos.

The school was closed Tuesday after rehab workers discovered late Monday afternoon the insulation used in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems in two school buildings contained asbestos.

Clark County School District spokesman Ray Willis said air samples taken on Monday indicated students and staff were not at risk of asbestos exposure.

He said the air samples showed only trace elements of asbestos and that "we are assured the school environment is safe and poses no potential health risk to students or staff."

Willis said the trace elements discovered at the school were less than amounts of asbestos that can be normally detected in the atmosphere. He said the source of the asbestos in the atmosphere can be traced to automobile brake linings which contain asbestos.

As part of the 1994 school bond, Lincoln is undergoing rehabilitation work to its heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.

Willis said all of the insulation that contained asbestos was removed by Tuesday afternoon.
