* CHARITY SOFTBALL -- Tickets are on sale for a star-studded charity softball game at 1 p.m. April 5, at Cashman Field. The Hollywood All-Stars team will start its 18th season vs. some real sluggers, the San Francisco 49ers. All proceeds will go to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada. The All-Stars lineup will include Joey Slotnick and Jonathan Silverman from "The Single Guy," Judd Nelson from "Suddenly Susan," Dana Ashbrook from "Crisis Center," Kevin Eubanks from "The Tonight Show" band, Hollywood actors Daniel Baldwin and Jack Scalia, and pop star Meat Loaf. Tickets are $7 and $9 at TicketMaster, 474-4000.

* HELP THE Y -- The YMCA of Southern Nevada has kicked off its annual Current Support Campaign. The goal of the five-week campaign is $130,000. As a nonprofit organization and a United Way agency, the YMCA relies on all funds raised in the campaign to support YMCA programs for youths, families, seniors and adults. All contributions go to the YMCA's work in Southern Nevada. Brochures and pledge forms may be obtained by calling 877-9622.

* NEW YORK STYLE PARTY -- A benefit of Soap Stars Saving Lives for United Blood Services will be 7 p.m. April 5 at the New York-New York hotel-casino. Tickets are $50 in advance and $75 at the door, which includes a New York-style party. Requests for tickets through the mail must be received by April 1. * 'EXPRESS' EVENING -- On April 12, the Las Vegas Hilton is sponsoring an "Evening at Starlight Express" for Community Action Against Rape. This fund-raising event includes the 7:30 p.m. performance of "Starlight Express" followed by a gourmet reception featuring international pastries, coffees and liqueurs with a silent auction. Funds raised will be used to help child and adult victims of sexual assault. Tickets are $25. For more information or reservations, call CAAR, 385-2153, by April 9.

* CASINO NIGHT FUND-RAISER -- On March 28, the University of Nevada ROTC program will host a casino night fund-raiser at the Santa Fe hotel-casino. The purpose is to raise scholarship dollars for ROTC students taking undergraduate courses at UNLV and the ROTC courses at the Community College of Southern Nevada. The public is invited to participate in the gaming, raffle and auction, which will be held in the ballroom of the Santa Fe. Buy-in at the door of the ballroom will be $50 for a supply of no-value chips to play at craps, blackjack and poker tables set up in the ballroom.

* AAUW FUND-RAISER -- The Las Vegas branch of the American Association of University Women will hold its annual fund-raiser March 26 to generate money for local scholarships and educational equity activities. The dinner will begin at 6 p.m. at the Golden Nugget. Tickets are $100 and available by calling 594-2929. Diana Bennett, president and chief operating officer of Casino Data Systems, will deliver the keynote speech, "Smashing the Glass Ceiling."

* SPRINGS POPS -- Community College of Southern Nevada's College Singers and Southern Nevada Jazz will perform with UNLV's Jazz Choir in a benefit concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Winchester Community Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive. The "Spring Pops" performance will provide money, food and clothing for the homeless, especially children. Mobile Assistance and Shelter for the Homeless will receive concert proceeds and donations to assists MASH clients. A community-based one-stop crisis intervention center, MASH coordinates the services of government agencies, nonprofit service providers and shelter providers to offer crisis intervention and transitional housing and care. * NONPROFIT DEPOSIT -- Bank of America recently donated nearly $25,000 to 17 nonprofit groups throughout Nevada, including Boulder Dam Area Council of the Boy Scouts, the Latin Chamber of Commerce, the Nevada Minority Purchasing Council, Foster Parents of Southern Nevada, Sign Design Theatre Company, Las Vegas Blind Center, Parkinson's Disease Support Group, American Cancer Society, YMCA of Southern Nevada, Asian Chamber of Commerce, Christmas in April, Nevada Women's Fund and Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

* TOUR DE CURE '97 -- The local chapter of the American Diabetes Association's annual bicycle ride, "Tour de Cure '97," will be May 3. The tour will begin and end at Bruce Trent Park, the corner of Vegas Drive and Rampart Boulevard. Three routes will be offered: 25K (15 miles), 50K (31 miles) and, for the serious rider, the 100K (62 miles). Early registration fee is $15. All riders are asked to raise a minimum of $75 in pledges. * BOWL FOR KIDS' SAKE -- NevTEL's Bowl for Kids' Sake to benefit Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Southern Nevada will be April 26-27 at the Santa Fe Bowling Center, 4949 N. Rancho Drive, and Sunset Lanes, 4451 E. Sunset Blvd. Last year's Bowl for Kids' Sake raised more than $50,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada, which matches children from single-parent families with a special role model. This year's goal is to raise more than $70,000 with the help of more than 1,000 league and amateur bowlers. Call the Bowl for Kids' Sake hotline at 731-9952 to register. Each participant needs to gather pledges of at least $25. All bowlers with a minimum pledge bowl two free games and receive gifts and free food.

* MAKING A DIFFERENCE -- Soroptimist International of Greater Las Vegas recently held its "Making a Difference for Women" luncheon. The club has recognized women and businesses in Las Vegas since 1982. The Women Helping Women award was presented to Sheri Day, owner of Speedy Office Supplies. The award was designed to reinforce one of Soroptimist's objectives, the advancement of the status of women, by honoring those women in the community who have done the most to help other women. Day was recognized for her commitment to contributing to the improvement of women's status in society and her initiation of programs to meet the special needs of women.

Special needs

* BEAR HUGS -- Operation Hug, a philanthropic project of Assistance League of Las Vegas, provides teddy bears to comfort children traumatized by fires, accident or domestic violence. These bears are being distributed through many law enforcement and firefighting agencies. To date, more than 4,000 bears have helped comfort children in our community. * WHEELCHAIRS NEEDED -- The Artie J. Cannon Helping Hands of Henderson operates a loan closet of durable medical equipment. The need for wheelchairs has left its closet empty. Helping Hands is a volunteer organization that assists seniors and disabled, primarily in providing rides for doctor appointments, therapy sessions and shopping. Anyone wishing to donate items of durable medical equipment or who is interested in volunteering can call Christine Nelson, 558-4808. Items can be dropped off at the office, in the St. Rose Dominican Medical Plaza Building at 98 E. Lake Mead Drive, Suite 105, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Arrangements can also be made for volunteers to pick up items.

* LIONS CLUB SALE -- The Las Vegas Breakfasters' Lion Club is accepting donations for its annual parking lot sale. The proceeds from these sales will be used for various projects in the community, including the Southern Nevada Sight Conversation, Lions Burn at University Medical Center and Western Lions Ear Foundation. The sale will be from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 5-6 at 1517 E. Sahara Ave. Call Harry Meyers at 451-7152.

* 'KARS FOR KIDNEYS' -- Donate your used automobiles to the National Kidney Foundation of Nevada. It will arrange a free pickup and you might qualify for a tax donation. The "Kars for Kidneys" program is the longest running vehicle donation programs in the state of Nevada. Proceeds are used to help fund the foundation's vital Patient Services Program.
