Washoe County sheriff's deputies found the weapon under the "Fanny Bridge" in Tahoe City, Calif.
The recent high discharge from the lake into the river was sharply curtailed on Tuesday. As a result, deputies say the gun was plainly visible from the bridge.
John Kegel, 22, was arraigned Wednesday on murder charges resulting from last week's killing of Terre Lee, 49.
Lee was found dead Thursday at her Incline Village condominium. She had been shot once in the chest at least 24 hours before her body was found.
Kegel had been staying with a friend in a condominium behind where the victim lived. He's held without bail at the Washoe County Jail on a charge of murder with use of a deadly weapon.
