Assembly committee recommends ‘bracelet bill’

Health and Human Services members added several amendments suggested by the bill's author, Assemblywoman Gene Segerblom, D-Boulder City. But Segerblom said Wednesday she sought only minor changes so that the bill would get through the committee quickly.

AB29 allows people to have "do not resuscitate" bracelets or cards with the permission of their doctors. Although the bill doesn't specify the ages of those eligible, Segerblom intended it for elderly and terminally ill patients.

"There's no note in there about the age, because we thought that'd be getting too involved," Segerblom said. "We'll just leave the bill as it is and the debates about age can come later."

The amendments specify the life-sustaining treatments that "do not resuscitate" identification would deny, including chest compressions, assisted breathing, the administration of drugs and other forms of cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Another amendment also requires Nevada to recognize "do not resuscitate" orders from other states.

Segerblom said she introduced AB29 after watching friends with terminal illnesses pay exorbitant medical costs. The bill now faces a vote on the Assembly floor.
