Donations from walk/run will benefit local parks

The Clark County Parks and Recreation Department has teamed with the Clark County Conservation District to present the second annual "March for Parks" fund-raiser on Earth Day.

The two-mile walk/run is scheduled for 8 a.m. April 19 at Sunset Park, 2601 E. Sunset Road, right before KVBC Channel 3's Earth Fair, said Sue Francesconi of the parks department.

There is no fee for participating, but everyone is encouraged to collect pledges or make a donation.

All money raised will be split between local county park improvements and developing the county's Desert Wetlands Park, she said.

Star Nursery will donate Japanese black pine trees to the first 50 entrants who make a contribution. Prizes will be awarded to the marchers who raise the most donations, courtesy of Trader Joe's.

March for Parks packets are available at all Clark County Parks and Recreation facilities, Trader Joe's East and at Sunset Park on the day of the event beginning at 7 a.m. Donations will be accepted all day.

National sponsors such as Clairol Herbal Essences, Walking Magazine and First USA allow 100 percent of the funds raised by local marchers to go directly to local parks, Francesconi said.

Last year, Clark County raised about $600 in its first march, she said.

Nationally, March for Parks raised about $2 million in 1996 and involved more than a million people. All 50 states and nine foreign countries participated for a total of 1,200 marches worldwide.

The National Parks and Conservation Association created March for Parks in 1990.
