John McCarron: Bernard leads LV contingent in Showboat Invitational

RICK BENARD gave Las Vegas a chance to cheer for a local player at the 38th annual Showboat Invitational.

Benard, 31, a part-time PBA player, averaged 222 for the week-long event, taking home $2,600 for his efforts. Benard, who finished in 19th place for the 56-game tournament, is currently serving as a board member on the new Nevada Tournament Bowlers Alliance (NTBA).

Parker Bohn III won the tournament on the bench, as defending champion Walter Ray Williams didn't have a big 10th frame, losing 206-204. Parker collected his second consecutive title while Williams was consoled with an $18,000 check. Next week's event is in Illinois.

Anthony back in form

Earl Anthony used to dominate the PBA in his younger days, winning more than 40 titles. Last week, making one of his rare tournament entries, he took home the first-place prize of $9,000, beating out steady Avery LeBlanc, 248-243.

LeBlanc got by Roger Workman 214-212 and Gary Dickinson 244-235. Larry Laub took fifth.

Local winners

John and Trish Marshall took home $125 for winning the St. Patrick's Day doubles at Mahoney's Bowling Center, scoring a 1,685 total. Finishing in second was the Chris Snipes couple (1,664, $100). Taking third were Paul Salas and Gary Trosen (1,624, $80).

The Gold Coast Shoot-out was won by Ken Wolcott (220, $108), beating out Chris Kaiser (200, $70) and Chris Schwartz (169, $50). The Gold Coast Shoot-out is held every Thursday. For more information, call Jason Gupton at 367-4700.

Around town

LPBT star Kim Adler has been seen in most of the local bowling centers promoting the sport with her husband, Tom. On break from the tour, Adler will be helping centers with her tour knowledge and instructing.

Tom has been subbing in some local leagues at Sunset and Mahoney's. Kim accompanies Tom and helps local players with her expertise.
