Nevada’s days as 702-only area code ending

A single area code can accommodate 7.9 million numbers. The 702 area already has 5.1 million and is adding 90,000 a year.

Fax machines, computer modems, cellular phones and pagers are just adding to the need for new phone numbers, according to Nevada Area Code Relief, a group representing the dozens of communications companies in Nevada.

The new area code and its geographical area will be announced later this year. Once it's introduced, Nevada will end its status as one of just 14 states with a single area code, the area code group said on Wednesday.

Public hearings will be held next month in Las Vegas, Minden, Reno and Elko to discuss the impending change. The group stresses that the additional area code will have no effect on phone rates.
