Say county has unused millions despite deteriorating roads

County commissioner Myrna Williams says she is frustrated by the surplus, and believes the county has stockpiled millions of dollars that should be spent fixing roads in older districts.

"I'm not suggesting that we don't have the money, or that it's not being used properly. It's just not being used at all," Williams said. "The focus has been on newer, wealthier neighborhoods. The older areas are victims of benign neglect."

The commissioner's office receives 30 to 40 calls a week from residents complaining about potholes, cracks, broken curbs and other road problems. She said some callers have been told by county staff they must paint yellow lines on their curbs because the county can't afford supplies.
