Colonial Dames society holding state conference

The local Samoset Chapter will host the conference. National President Dorothie Lovett will attend.

The local chapter was chartered in 1971; the national society celebrates its 82nd anniversary in July.

Among the national society's activities are providing scholarships; making an annual gift to the Church of St. George at Gravesend, England, for the Pocahontas Memorial Garden; presenting an award to an outstanding cadet in the engineering department at West Point; presenting a wreath annually at the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7; and making a donation for the Women in Armed Services Memorial in honor of Colonial Dame veterans.

Lovett's goal as national president is to increase exchange scholarships at the local level and enhance the society's educational program.

Lovett was born in California but spent her early years in Idaho before she moved with her family to Reno. She attended school in Reno and met her husband, Jack, there.

She has been a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century for 21 years. She served on the executive board for eight years and was elected president general for 1995-97.

She has served on many of the society's committees and in many office positions. She is an organizing and chartering member of the Palo Verde, Ariz., chapter and helped organize the Arizona state society.

Lovett is a member of several other hereditary organizations, among them: the Flagon and Trencher, Descendants of Colonial Tavern Keepers; the Hugenot Society; Daughters of the American Revolution; International Society for British Genealogy, Family Association; Hereditary Order of the First Families of Massachusetts; and the New England Historical Genealogy Society.
