UNLV offers discount for performances

Classical music/dance enthusiasts will receive one free children's ticket with the purchase of one adult ticket. This offer is valid only one hour prior to each performance. However, enough tickets have been set aside so that families that wish to bring a child will be able to attend.

The Mazowsze Ensemble will perform at 8 p.m. Monday in Artemus Ham Hall. The Mazowsze Ensemble, a popular Polish musical dance ensemble, has performed in 40 countries. Its repertoire includes songs and dances from 38 different ethnographic regions of Poland and is mainly based on Tadeusz Sygietynski's compositions. Tickets range from $17.50 to $43.

The Emerson String Quartet will perform at 8 p.m. April 5 in the Artemus Ham Hall. Its achievements include three Grammy Awards, Gramophone Magazine's Record of the Year, and Chamber Music Record of the Year. The concert will include works by Schubert, Beethoven and Barber. Tickets are $20.

Quartetto Gelato will perform at 1 p.m. April 13 in Artemus Ham Hall. The Toronto-based quartet has been touted as "cheeky" and "slyly humorous, too." In addition to its dry humor and occasional clowning around, they are skilled artists. Tickets are $10.

Tafelmusik will perform at 2 p.m. April 20 in Artemus Ham Hall. This Canadian orchestra with period instruments was founded in 1979. Jeanne Lamon has been music director since 1981. Based in Toronto, the ensemble has 19 permanent members. All members of the orchestra are specialists in historical performance practice. Tickets are $12.50.

Andrew Smith, cellist, will perform at 8 p.m. April 25 in the Black Box Theatre. He will play works by Bach, Debussy and Kodaly. He is on the faculty of UNLV and a member of the Mariposa Trio.

Smith played for three years with the Nicoletti String Quartet at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he is a candidate for a doctor of musical arts degree. His accompanist is pianist Carol Stivers, a founding member of the Mariposa Trio who performs as accompanist as well as soloist with numerous orchestras.

Tickets are available at the Performing Arts Center box office, 895-3801. The box office is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
