Letter: Homeowners need to rally against tyranny of CAI

If only a small percentage of homeowners are unhappy with their association, why have I received hundreds of call from people seeking justice from the tyranny of their boards?

Why does CAI declare itself nonprofit and charge $150 to train mediators; why does it charge $295 annual membership for landscapers, painters, roofers, lawyers, developers, engineers, CPAs, etc.? (The list is endless.)

Is it because they recommend their members be hired when your complex needs its pool cleaned or security upgraded?

Why is my management company, which belongs to CAI, paid $17,000 a year by my association and I have no say in the matter?

Why do we need management companies?

A homeowner can be hit with a fine for something as simple as growing a rose. If the homeowner doesn't pay the fine, a lien is placed on the property.

My organization, Justice for Home and Condo Owners, would like to see the attorney general of Nevada investigate the nonprofit status of CAI.

CAI is big and powerful, fueled by a large war chest, but the people's strength -- when harness -- is mightier.

It was people, not lobbyists or politicians, who ended the war in Vietnam. We can end the tyranny of homeowner associations.
