Notes: Mickelson, a 10-time winner, closed with a 6-under 30 on the back nine, tying the tournament record last achieved by Mark Calcavecchia in the 1996 final round. The former Arizona State star eagled the 570-yard 12th hole, hitting a driver from the fairway onto the fringe and holing a 40-foot putt. He missed the cut in seven of 11 previous tournaments on the Florida swing, including two starts at Bay Hill. ... Arnold Palmer, in his first tournament since prostate cancer surgery Jan. 15, did not return to the course for the completion of the second round Saturday. Palmer, 67, Bay Hill's principle owner, shot an 81 on Thursday and was 14 over with four holes to play when the second round was suspended Friday night. ... Tiger Woods closed with a 68 to tie for seventh at 278. ... Appleby, an 25-year-old Australian, won the Honda Classic last week for his first tour title.

Notes: Davies, who won with a 3-foot par putt on the first extra hole, is the first LPGA player to win the same tournament four consecutive years. The English star broke the record she shared with Louise Suggs (Dallas Civitan Open, 1959-61), Kathy Whitworth (Orange Blossom Classic, 1968-70) and Sandra Haynie (Charity Golf Classic, 1973-75). Davies, 1-6 in playoffs, has 15 career victories on the LPGA tour, and also won the 1987 U.S. Open before she was granted tour membership.

Bland, a 51-year-old South African, has five senior victories. ... George Bayer and Howie Johnson won the Demaret Division for players 70 and over with a 5-under 137 total. Sam Snead, 84, and E. Harvie Ward tied for fifth at 143. ... On Saturday, Gene Littler and Don January took the 60-69 division at 13-under 131.

Notes: Olazabal, making only his third start after an 18-month layoff because of crippling foot problems, won his 16th European tour title. The Spaniard, 20th in the European Ryder Cup standings, tied for fourth last week in the Portuguese Open, and tied for 12th three weeks ago in the Dubai Desert Classic. ... European Ryder Cup captain Seve Ballesteros missed his fifth cut in five 1997 starts, shooting 72-76.
