NHL race: Bruins close to elimination

The streak is over for the Boston Bruins, while the Ottawa Senators and Anaheim Mighty Ducks hope to start one.

While the Bruins haven't officially been eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs, it's just a matter of time before their record streak of 29 straight playoff appearances will be history.

While the "Original Six" Bruins are having their worst season since 1966-67, such relative newcomers as the Senators and Mighty Ducks have legitimate shots at making their first playoff appearance.

With a 5-4 victory over the Bruins on Saturday, the Senators moved within three points of the eighth and final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.

As of Sunday, Washington and Montreal were tied for seventh in the East with 66 points, while Hartford was ninth with 64. Ottawa and Tampa Bay were right behind with 63 points apiece, while the New York Islanders were 12th with 61.

The Whalers, Senators, Lightning and Islanders all have 10 games remaining.
