UNLV profs honored for outside work

Four UNLV professors are being awarded prizes for the work they do outside the classroom.

Warren Burggren, a professor of biological sciences who has spent five years at UNLV, was doubly honored with a Regents' Research Award and Barrick Distinguished Scholar Award, both of which are accompanied by a $5,000 prize.

Burggren, who is also interim dean of the College of Sciences, was recognized for his research interests in physiology. He is particularly interested in the development and evolution of respiratory and cardiovascular systems. These are two of many awards and grants he has received in conjunction with his research over the years.

He has co-authored the book, "Evolution of Air Breathing Vertebrates," and has edited several books, as well as published numerous articles.

Carol Kimball, a professor of music, was awarded the Regent's Award for creative activities. She is founder and director of the UNLV Opera Theatre and served as interim chair of the department of dance arts. Now, as chairwoman of the department of music, she is the editor of Opera Journal, a referred publication of the National Opera Association.

She recently had a book published, "Song: A Guide to Style and Literature," which is an overview of 136 composers and 485 descriptive annotations of single songs and cycles of song literature of 10 countries.

During her 25-year tenure at UNLV, she has received a litany of awards, including the 1996 Outstanding Faculty Award from the UNLV Alumni Association, the Nevada Governor's Arts Award and the Barrick Distinguished Scholar Award.

Joseph McCullough, a professor of English and chairman of the English department, also received a Barrick Distinguished Scholar Award. He is an expert on the works of American humorist Mark Twain and specializes in 19th century American literature.

He co-authored "The Bible According to Mark Twain: Writings on Heaven, Eden and the Flood," which is just one of his many writings.

McCullough has twice served as a Fulbright lecturer in American literature -- at the University of Athens in Greece in 1985-86 and at the University of Helsinki in Finland in 1980-81. He has taught at UNLV since 1969.

Lawrence Walker, an associate professor of biological sciences, was honored as a Barrick Scholar, a tribute that includes a cash award of $2,000.

His research involves the study of plant reproduction.

Walker is editing a book on the ecosystems of disturbed ground. Before coming to UNLV in 1992, he taught at the University of Puerto Rico.

Funding for the Barrick Awards is provided to UNLV by Las Vegas philanthropist Marjorie Barrick and the Regents' Award is part of the university system budget.
