Kids admit setting vacant house ablaze

NORTH LAS VEGAS -- A fire destroyed an abandoned house, and two neighborhood kids have admitted setting it on fire while playing with matches, a fire official said.

Fifteen firefighters responded to the blaze that destroyed the vacant structure at 3405 E. Twining Ave., near Pecos Road and Lake Mead Boulevard, about 4:45 p.m. Monday.

When they arrived, the house was engulfed in flames. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in about 10 minutes, but not before the home was destroyed, said North Las Vegas Fire Department Division Chief Jim Stubler.

Fire investigators estimated the damage at $60,000. The two juveniles were referred to the Clark County juvenile fire setter program. The youths, whose names were not released because they are minors, admitted to fire officials that they started the fire, said North Las Vegas Fire Marshal Joe Skaarup.

No injuries were reported, and neighboring homes were not damaged, fire officials said.
