Silverado gets 2 no-hitters in tourney

There's just no getting around it in high school softball. Whatever else you might have going for you, an absence of pitching can make for a terribly long season.

In the last two days, the Silverado Skyhawks have showcased four sterling pitching performances, and they'll be playing today in the championship game of the Clark Invitational Eastern tournament because of it.

Julia Yurek and Tiffany Finateri both twirled no-hitters on Tuesday in the second day of the event, being played at the Community College of Southern Nevada.

Finateri led Silverado to a 10-0 victory over Horizon, while Yurek -- getting her second win of the tournament -- shut down Mar Vista in a 17-0 pummeling.

Silverado, by virtue of its 4-0 record in Pool B and overwhelming run advantage of 30-1, advanced to the 1:45 p.m. title game against Del Campo, Calif.

Silverado had beaten Patrick Henry 2-1 and Linfield 1-0 on Monday. On Tuesday, the offense joined the parade.

Other Clark County teams who are making strong showings in the tournament include Chaparral, which also is 4-0 in Pool B; Cimarron-Memorial, which won three of its four games in Pool B; and Green Valley, whose 3-1 record in Pool A was enough to get it a berth in the fifth-place game today.

Baseball

As this is spring break, many of the teams are scattered about for various tournaments.

Silverado went to the Skyhawk Classic in Phoenix, and picked up a 5-4 win over Deer Valley, Ariz., on Tuesday. Jose Herrera belted a solo home run for the Skyhawks.

Durango and Western are competing in the adidas Invitational at Durango, and the host Trailblazers are having an exceptional showing. They stomped South High of Bakersfield, Calif., 9-0 on Tuesday, on the heels of two wins on Monday. The Warriors on Tuesday fell 9-4 to North Hollywood, Calif.

Eldorado played in the Moapa Valley Invite, and won that event's first-place trophy with a 10-0 triumph over Basic's junior varsity. It capped off a busy day for the Sundevils, who earlier on Tuesday defeated the host team, Moapa Valley, and Rancho, to move into the title game.

Also, beginning Thursday and continuing on through Saturday, Bishop Gorman is the host for the annual Gael Easter Invitational tournament.
