Where You Stand for March 26, 1997

I was so excited to hear about the Liggett company finally telling the truth about how awful and harmful the effects of smoking are. Hope sprang up within me just as it did when the Silver City casino went smoke-free. Then instead of not selling cigarettes anymore, all they did was put another warning on the outside of the cigarette carton, just as Silver City gave in to the demands of the majority of Las Vegans who smoke.

Read our lips...

Imposing a sales tax increase is a regressive move that unfairly dumps another debt on the majority of us who work in the service and tourist industry. We already pay high rent, high home payments, high insurance and a high cost of living in general. Now we're being asked to pay for a water system that should have been installed when we made the investment to live here. That the developers have taken our money, lined their pockets and moved on is a given. Now we're being asked to foot the bill again. If the politicians don't have the guts to get this stuff paid for by the developer, stop the growth, but don't scapegoat us working slugs with another sales tax.
