Del Papa almost a candidate

CARSON CITY -- Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa inched closer to a formal announcement that she's in the race for governor next year.

"In all likelihood I will be a candidate," she said Wednesday. But she added that this was a qualified announcement and a formal declaration won't be made until next year.

Del Papa was a speaker at the Soroptimist Club at Stateline at Lake Tahoe. When asked if she was going to run for governor, she replied "yes," but said there were several qualifications.

"I explained to them I have put together an exploratory committee," she said. "I believe the campaigns should occur in the year of the election.

"Unofficially, I will be in this race," she said later.

"We're 76 weeks out," she said, referring to the time of the 1998 general election.

Her exploratory committee, led by Las Vegas Mayor Jan Laverty Jones, is looking at the support and the money available for the campaign.

Kenny Guinn, former head of Southwest Gas Corp. and PriMerit Bank, is already campaigning for the Republican nomination for governor. Gov. Bob Miller will have served two full terms and cannot run again.
