Lee Canyon youth camp registration set

Registration begins April 1 for three one-week resident camps in July at Camp Lee Canyon.

Two weeks are for children, ages 8-11, and the third for ages 12-15. Camp Odyssey for teens is July 6-12. Lee Canyon Arts Camp for children 8-11 is July 13-19; and Omnicamp: An Adventure in Science runs July 27 through Aug. 2.

The camps, which are sponsored by Clark County Parks and Recreation, offer an introduction to science and the arts in a cool, outdoor mountain setting.

Omnicamp, now in its sixth year, will offer classes such as earth science, chemistry, botany and zoology. Campers will use the environment as a laboratory to study the native flora and fauna of the Spring Mountain Range, while participating in hands-on science activities.

The Arts Camp is celebrating its eighth year, and features an introduction to the arts with classes in visual art, creative writing, drama, music and creative movement.

Omnicamp and Arts Camp have received program awards from the Nevada Recreation and Park Society.

The newest program, Camp Odyssey, is in its third year. It focuses on the performing arts, with campers working together with faculty and staff to plan a performance at the end of the camp. Outdoor activities are also part of the program.

All three camps have a registered nurse in residence. There are two counselors per cabin and an on-site camp director and assistant director each week. The faculty are all professional educators with a wide variety of training and teaching experience. Meals are provided by a professional catering company with staff in residence at the camp.

Registration will be taken at the Sunset Park office, 2601 E. Sunset Road, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. A space may be reserved with a $95 deposit.

The service charge is $250 for the art and science camps and $265 for the teen camp. This includes room and board, all supplies and a camp T-shirt. Parents must provide transportation to and from the camp (located 50 miles northwest of Las Vegas.)
