On Tuesday, prostitute Carol Leigh will speak on "Prostitution Politics: Issues, Images and Voices From Within the Industry."
Leigh, who also is a poet, performance artist and filmmaker in San Francisco, is scheduled to speak at 7:30 p.m. in Room A-108 of the Classroom Building Complex. Her talk will include a video presentation.
Leigh will present an overview of issues in sex-industry politics from a sex worker's rights perspective. Topics will include diversity in the sex trade, laws and enforcement practices, immigrant prostitutes' rights, decriminalization vs. legalization, Nevada's legal brothels, the San Francisco Task Force on Prostitution and the feminist controversy over women and the sex industry.
"Bodies, Boundaries & Bounty: A Public Forum on the Personal, Political and Economic Realities of the Southern Nevada Sex Industries" is a series of public forums scheduled for April 2, 9 and 16 at Winchester Community Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive.
The forums, all set for 7:30 p.m., will include:
APRIL 2 -- "Voices from within the Industry."
APRIL 9 -- "Voices from the Community."
APRIL 16 -- "Voices in Dialogue: The Future of Southern Nevada's Sex Industries."
All the women's history month events are free and open to the public.
Sponsors for the April events include UNLV's women's studies program, women's studies club and the departments of communication studies, political science, public administration and sociology, as well as the Nevada Sex Industry Research Project-Community Coalition and the Nevada chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.
