UNLV Roundup: Horton hires a new tight ends coach

UNLV head football coach Jeff Horton completed his staff Wednesday by naming Mike Emprey as tight ends coach.

The 27-year-old Emprey is a former Brigham Young star who last coached at West Texas A&M, where he oversaw the linebackers.

A former standout offensive lineman at BYU, Emprey lettered in 1987 and 1991-93. A three-time Western Athletic Conference scholar-athlete, he was named to the All-WAC team after serving as team captain his senior year while starting at guard and tackle.

Horton also said that special teams coordinator Chris White, who was hired by UNLV in December as tight ends coach, will move to the defense and coach the middle linebackers in the Rebels' new 4-3 scheme.

Softball

The Lady Rebels split a doubleheader in Los Angeles, losing to Washington 4-3 and defeating Loyola-Marymount 2-0. Freshman leftfielder Keao Chang and catcher Julie Crandall had two each hits to lead UNLV against Pac-10 power Washington (23-6) in the opener. In the second game, the Rebel sophomore pitcher Tanya Edwards (5-0) shut out Marymount on three hits. Shortstop Kim Rondina hit her 11th home run of the season for UNLV. The win improves the Rebels' overall record to 15-13.

Golf

The UNLV golf team ascen ded to first today in the Golfweek/Taylor Made Collegiate Rankings. The Rebels are 35 points ahead of runner-up Oklahoma State. Completing the top 10 are Southern Cal, Arizona, TCU, Wake Forest, New Mexico, Florida, Arizona State and North Carolina.
