Assailants sought after stabbing man in chest

Two assailants were still at large today after stabbing a man and cracking him in the head with a tire iron after he tried to stop them from burglarizing a car.

The attack occurred about 4:30 p.m. Thursday when the man tried to stop two people from breaking into a car in the 800 block of Rancho Drive, and then hopped in the bed of their getaway pickup truck, police said.

"One of the suspects stabbed the man in his chest area, and then the other beat him with a tire iron," said Sgt. Charles Hank.

The two then sped through a neighborhood off Campbell and Alta drives where their red Nissan pickup clipped a curb and slid on its side almost 30 yards toward the intersection of Campbell Drive and Campbell Circle, police said.

Witnesses said the two men climbed out of the pickup and took off running northwest of Campbell Circle. K-9 teams searched the area with the assistance of Metro's helicopter but had not found anything, police said.

The suspects are described as two white males in their 20s, one of whom had long dark hair in a ponytail. The pickup they were driving had Colorado plates.

Anyone with information on the attackers' whereabouts is asked to call Metro Police at 795-3111 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.
