Letter: You say tomayto, while they say tomato

If you see it in the Las Vegas SUN, that's not necessarily so, especially when the SUN persistently calls a concrete sidewalk "cement." Along with nearly all other media across the country, for that matter, when referring to the so-called "cement bandit."

The fact is, and always has been, that cement is just one of several ingredients of concrete, which is made up of not only cement (a substance made from lime or a mixture of clay and limestone), but also water, sand and gravel aggregates and, often, other additives to help with texture, color or to either retard or accelerate the curing (hardening) process.

So, what about Jeremy Anderson and his mom and all the damage done? Well, that's up to all the rest of you to comment about. I'm just here to take care of the cement/concrete controversy, or to raise one in case it doesn't exist.

But no matter. I expect we'll continue to enjoy our evening strolls on cement sidewalks everywhere, just as kids will continue to leave their initials in same whenever the opportunity arises, as did I a half-century or so ago.
