Pool facts

Maintenance, health and safety requirements adopted and enforced by the Clark County Health District for public pools:

* CHLORINATION: Normal public pool chlorination is 1.0 to 5.0 parts per million of free chlorine residual at pH 7.0-8.0, as established by Nevada code.

* ALKALINITY: Total alkalinity is a term referring to the water's resistance to change. In public pools and spas, total alkalinity should range from 80 to 120 parts per million but, in public spas, cannot exceed 150 parts per million.

* CLARITY: Water in a public pool must be sufficiently clear so the pattern of the main drain is clearly visible from a walk at the deep end. Failure to meet this requirement is grounds for immediate closure of the pool.

* EQUIPMENT: All public bathing places, swimming facilities and spas must be equipped with a chlorinator, hydrochlorinator or other disinfectant feeders. Also, every facility must have an approved test set for determining pH, disinfectant residual, total alkalinity and other chemical levels.

* TEMPERATURE: Water temperature in a public spa must remain above 70 degrees but cannot be artificially heated above 104 degrees. There is no minimum or maximum heat level requirement for a public pool.

* SAFETY: The following equipment is mandatory: At least one life-saving unit, including a ring buoy (at least 20 inches in diameter) with attached rope, a life pole or shepherd's crook hook (with at least a 12-foot handle), a properly filled first aid kit and two or more blankets.

* SIGNS: Applicable signs such as "No Diving," "No Swimming, Bathing or Use of Facility Allowed After Dark" or No Lifeguard on Duty" must be posted in letters not less than four inches tall. The sign "Caution -- Chlorine Gas" must be placed on the door to the gas chlorinator room.
