Nuke waste subject of NTS meet

The Community Advisory Board for Nevada Test Site Programs is set to meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Room 1422 of the High Desert Conference Center at the Cheyenne Avenue campus of the Community College of Southern Nevada.

The board meets on the first Wednesday of each month to discuss issues related to the U.S. Department of Energy's environmental management activities at the Test Site, 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

At this week's meeting, board members will discuss reprocessing and disposal of mixed wastes and plutonium remediation on the Tonopah Test Range. The board also will receive an update on Yucca Mountain, 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas, which DOE scientists are studying for a proposed high-level nuclear waste dump.

The Community Advisory Board reviews and makes recommendations on DOE plans and activities in the areas of environmental restoration, waste management and technology development at the Test Site. It also provides the DOE's Nevada Operations Office with advice on strategic decisions that affect future use, risk management, economic development and budget priorities.

The public is encouraged to attend.
