Commission okays sales tax hike

Despite complaints from two downtown businesses and at least one of its own members, the Washoe County Commission approved a quarter-cent increase in the sales tax at Monday's meeting.

Half of the income from the hike will go toward lowering the railroad tracks through Reno. The other half is earmarked for flood control and public safety.

The business owners and Commissioner James Galloway don't think Union Pacific or the county have met all the criteria required by the Legislature for the sales tax increase.

The tax will increase from 7 cents to 7.25 cents for each dollar's purchase.
