Bryan seeks White House fete for UNLV’s golf team

Sen. Richard Bryan (D-Nev.) has asked President Clinton to hold a ceremony at the White House to honor the UNLV golf team for winning the 1998 NCAA men's championship.

"The UNLV golf team has made Nevada proud and their remarkable achievement is worthy of recognition at the highest levels," Bryan said. "I know that with the President's love of golf he will welcome the team with open arms at the White House."

The Rebels won the national title last weekend with a record 34-under-par score at Albuquerque, N.M.

In addition to the White House ceremony, Bryan will introduce a resolution in the Senate to recognize the achievement of the team and its coach, Dwaine Knight.

As expected, UNLV finished the season as the nation's top-ranked team in the final edition of the MasterCard rankings released Wednesday.

The Rebels finished 112 points ahead of Clemson. Georgia Tech finished third, Oklahoma State finished fourth and Houston was fifth.

Individually, UNLV's Jeremy Anderson finished the year ranked No. 9, while Bill Lunde was No. 10. Charley Hoffman finished 21st and Chris Berry was 23rd. Georgia Tech's Bryce Molder and Matt Kuchar were ranked 1-2.
