People in the News for June 4, 1998

The script for "People in the News: The Movie" is developing nicely, thank you. It will star Leo DiCaprio in the heartwarming tale of an asteroid that crashes to Earth, sinks the Titanic and somehow -- a few plot points still have to be smoothed out -- involves Godzilla. Does concept get any higher? However, we have dropped a planned "Showgirls" element -- actress Elizabeth Berkley has simply been too busy lately ducking angry fashion model Kathleen McManamon. In a New York court Wednesday, McManamon pleaded guilty to harassing the actress and her boyfriend, Roger Wilson, because Wilson had dumped McManamon to date Berkley. The model admitted calling Wilson and Berkley to "harass, annoy and alarm" them. She was arrested in January after Wilson told police she'd said, "I know where you live! I know what you look like! You stole my man away from me! I'm going to kill you both." McManamon was given a conditional discharge and told to repay $630 in car repairs she'd charged to Wilson's account. "I'm relieved that it's over," McManamon said outside court. Idea: Forget Godzilla, let's add her to the script -- who needs a giant radioactive lizard if you can get a spurned, vengeful supermodel?

Movie miscellany

Crusading liberal documentarian Michael Moore is no doubt feeling harassed, annoyed and alarmed. A Los Angeles judge ruled this week that posters for his latest battle with the marauding Huns of corporate America, "The Big One," must be taken down. They too closely resemble posters for "Men in Black." Whereas the "MIB" poster featured Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith dressed in black and toting huge guns above the slogan, "Protecting the Earth from the scum of the universe," Moore's poster featured him in similar dress, toting a huge microphone, and the slogan "Protecting the earth from the scum of corporate America." It's a little thing we like to call parody, your honor. The judge, however, felt it was copyright infringement. Rats! There go those posters for "People in the News: The Movie" -- just like the "Showgirls" poster, only with Godzilla. Does concept get any higher?
