Obituaries for April 23, 1999

Robert J. Ames, 82, of Las Vegas died Monday in Las Vegas. He was born Nov. 23, 1916, in Geneva, Wis. A resident for 40 years, he owned Bob Ames' Sweeping Service and was a World War II Army veteran.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Nellie Hammers in 1998.

He is survived by two sisters, Alice Hand of Delavan, Wis., and Ruth Bulger of Darien, Wis.

Visitation and cremation will be private. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Bunkers Mortuary, 925 Las Vegas Blvd. North.

Leon Chapman

Leon Chapman, 64, of Las Vegas died Tuesday in a local hospital. He was born Oct. 8, 1934, in Bakersfield, Calif. A resident for 30 years, he was a general manager of Mission Industries.

He is survived by his wife, Teresa M.; one daughter, Toni Chapman, and two sons, Melvin Chapman and Marvin Chapman, all of Las Vegas; one sister, Evelyn Boyd of Los Banos, Calif.; one brother, Wayne Chapman of Stockton, Calif.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will continue until 7 p.m. today in Palm Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in Palm Chapel, Main. Palm Mortuary, 1600 S. Jones Blvd., is handling arrangements.

Maria Magdalena Doty

Maria Magdalena Doty, 86, of Henderson died Wednesday in Henderson. She was born July 16, 1912, in Germany. A resident for 39 years, she was a hotel housekeeper.

She is survived by two daughters, Mary C. Dittman of Anchorage, Alaska, and Reggie Sommer of Henderson; one son, Del M. Doty, and one sister, Erika Tiburzsy, both of Henderson; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled 10 a.m.-noon Monday in the Civic Center and Tonopah LDS Chapel. Burial will follow in Palm Valley View Memorial Park. Bunkers Mortuary, 925 Las Vegas Blvd. North, is handling arrangements.

Johnny Leo Hammons

Johnny Leo Hammons, 68, of Sparks died Wednesday in a Northern Nevada medical center. He was born March 13, 1931, in Gorce, Texas. A former Las Vegas resident for 20 years, he worked for 35 years in the telecommunications industry and was a Korean War Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Marcia; two daughters, Lori Schelin of Concho, Ariz., and Elizabeth McCullough of Fernley; one son, Jim Hammons of Las Vegas; one brother, Jim Hammons of Honolulu; three sisters, Ginger Cooksey and Ruby Dain Howell, both of Texas, and Florene Norjan of Massachusetts; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

No local services are scheduled. Ross, Burke & Knobel Mortuary, Sparks, is handling arrangements.

Joseph C. Mochnick

Joseph C. Mochnick, 87, of Las Vegas died Thursday in a local convalescent center. He was born March 19, 1912, in Ohio. A resident for 12 years, he was a retired owner-operator of an office machinery company and a lifetime member of the Elks in Santa Barbara, Calif.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; one daughter, Saundra Weatherly of Salem, Ore.; one son, Roger Mochnick of Seattle; two brothers, Rudy Mochnick of Sun City, Ariz., and Bill Mochnick of Solvang, Calif.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

No local services are scheduled. Palm Mortuary, 7400 W. Cheyenne Ave., is handling arrangements.

The family suggests contributions to the donor's favorite charity.

Alice H. Padgett

Alice H. Padgett, 84, of Las Vegas died Tuesday in a local health care center. She was born July 11, 1914, in Brownsville, Texas. A resident for 35 years, she was a retired executive secretary for an accounting firm.

She is survived by her husband, George D.; two daughters, Susan Parsons of Sacramento and Georgia Martin of Ridgecrest, Calif.; two sons, Kent Williams of Las Vegas and Kerry Williams of Los Angeles; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be 3 p.m. Saturday in Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave. Burial will follow in Palm Valley View Memorial Park.

Miguel Mike Sanchez

Miguel Mike Sanchez, 24, of Las Vegas died Monday in Las Vegas. He was born Nov. 11, 1974, in Nebraska. A resident for 20 years, he was a carpet cleaner.

He is survived by his mother, Yolanda Hernandez of Las Vegas; his father, Michael Morland; three sisters, Kimberly Sanchez, Samanth Moreno and Yolanda Moreno; two brothers, Louis Moreno and Jose Moreno; and two stepbrothers, Justin Morland and Dallas Morland.

Billy J. Sanner

Billy J. Sanner, 72, of Henderson died Wednesday in a local hospital. He was born June 15, 1926, in Oklahoma City. A resident for 57 years, he was a retired buyer for the county government, an umpire for Little League Baseball and the youngest foreman at Stauffer Chemical.

He is survived by three sons, Arthur Sanner of Henderson, Billy Sanner Jr. of Seattle and Donald Sanner of Dutch Harbor, Alaska; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Palm Mortuary, 800 S. Boulder Highway, Henderson, is handling arrangements.

Betty J. Strouse

Betty J. Strouse, 61, of Las Vegas died Wednesday in Las Vegas. She was born July 15, 1937, in Bay City, Texas. A resident for 20 years, she was a phone company clerk.

She is survived by her husband, Ronald W.; three sons, Jeffery J. Strouse of Beaumont, Texas, Stephen W. Strouse of Las Vegas and David A. Strouse of Henderson; and one daughter, Amy J. Strouse of Las Vegas.

Visitation is scheduled 3-8 p.m. Sunday in Bunkers Mortuary, 925 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Monday in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Donald Glen VanVelzer Jr.

Donald Glen VanVelzer Jr., 56, of Las Vegas died Tuesday in Mesquite. He was born Feb. 26, 1943, in California. A resident for six months, he was a sales representative for a logo company.

He is survived by his wife, Donna.

Visitation is scheduled 2-4 p.m. Saturday in Hites Funeral Services, 438 W. Sunset Road, Henderson. Burial will be in Colorado.

Cleophus James Wilmore

Cleophus James Wilmore, 37, of North Las Vegas died Saturday in a local hospital. A kitchen worker, he was born Sept. 20, 1961, in Monroe, La.

He is survived by his wife, Keisha Claiborne Wilmore; two daughters, TaShawna Wilmore and Tarika Wilmore; three sons, Cleophus J. Wilmore Jr., Okoyea Claiborne and Travonnie Claiborne; his parents, Jesse and Velma Wilmore of Las Vegas; six brothers; and seven sisters.

Visitation will continue until 7 p.m. today in Harrison-Ross Mortuaries, 2071 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Greater New Jerusalem Baptist Church, 1100 N. D St. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Larry B. Wilson

Larry B. Wilson, 49, of Las Vegas died Sunday in a local health care center. He was born Nov. 27, 1949, in Fordyce, Ark. A resident for 43 years, he was a laborer for the city government.

He is survived by two sons, Mario D'Andre Walker and Evan Bernard Wilson, both of Las Vegas; four brothers, Woodroe Wilson, James Givens and Billy Wilson, all of Las Vegas, and Anthony Wilson of Sun Valley, Calif.; and six sisters, Erma Norman, Barbara Chambers, Nora Wilson, Kathy Wilson and Sharon Wilson, all of Las Vegas, and Gloria Watkins of Minnesota.

Visitation is scheduled 2-7 p.m. Sunday in Affordable Cremation and Burial Service, 2457 N. Decatur Blvd. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday in the Greater New Jerusalem Baptist Church, 1100 N. D St. Burial will be in Palm Memorial Park.

Nell Francis Zanker

Nell Francis Zanker, 66, of Las Vegas died Thursday in Las Vegas. She was born May 23, 1932, in Ukiah, Calif. A resident for 20 years, she was a homemaker, an accomplished piano player of classical music and a graduate of the University of California at Davis.

She is survived by one son, F.W. Zanker, and one daughter, Chari L. Stanford, both of San Jose, Calif.; one sister, Helen DuYore of Paradise, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

The deceased requested no services. Burial will be in Ukiah. Bunkers Mortuary, 925 Las Vegas Blvd. North, is handling arrangements.
