New chief for Nevada tobacco control program

The state Health Division said Tuesday that Rexwinkel will start out at $39,213 a year in the job that had been held by Willie Edwards, who had been out on extended medical leave and also wanted to finish a doctoral program in education.

Dr. Randall Todd, chief of the division's Bureau of Disease Control and Intervention, said Edwards had been talking about cutting back his time for more than a year, and wasn't urged to quit.

Todd added Rexwinkel has been working in a lower-level job at the state Division of Child and Family Services, but has a strong management background in Alaska local and state government.

During the recent 1999 Nevada legislative session, Edwards contended the tobacco industry had worked with the casino industry to kill past anti-smoking legislation.

Philip Morris Inc. documents released earlier this year show the importance of the resort industry to tobacco companies in fighting such legislation, Edwards argued.

The tobacco industry's image was so tarnished that they needed allies whose reputation wasn't soiled, he added.
