Association seeks vehicle donations

The American Lung Association is asking residents to donate their used car, truck, motorcycle, boat or RV to its Vehicle Donation Program.

The vehicle is picked up for free and will be sold at an auction or sent to a salvage yard. All proceeds go to local lung health programs.

Transportation Dept. adds van to service

The Nevada Department of Transportation has added an additional van to its freeway response program and extended its operation hours.

There are now six vans patrolling the Las Vegas area on U.S. 95 and I-15 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays. Primary concentration is on the area between the Spaghetti Bowl and Summerlin Parkway where there is little or no shoulder.

The vans are equipped with spare auto parts, gas and diesel fuel, water and first aid kits. The service is free.

LV official elected to housing committee

Dewain Steadman, the Las Vegas Housing Authority's board chairman was elected to serve a two-year term as vice president on the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Official's Commissioners Affairs Committee.

Steadman has been a community activist for the past 20 years and has been active in the development of homeless programs. He holds a master's degree in education.

He was instrumental in acquiring 87 vouchers from HUD in two weeks and assisted in securing 1,000 Section 8 vouchers.

The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials is a membership organization comprising housing and community development professionals throughout the country. Its mission is to create affordable and safe communities, especially for low-income Americans.

Steadman was also elected vice president of the Pacific Southwestern Regional Board for Commissioner Affairs.

Green Valley student attends conference

Green Valley student Ryuji Rafael represented Nevada last week at Lehigh University's Millennial Conference in Bethlehem, Pa.

Rafael is one of 50 juniors attending the three-day conference that focuses on global issues in the new millennium. The students will discuss those issues.

One junior was selected from each state based on academic standing, involvement in extracurricular activities and essay answers on thoughts about the new millennium.

Free phone given for holiday donation

Throughout the holiday season Las Vegas residents who donate $20 or more to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Las Vegas will receive a free digital PCS phone from Nevada Bell Wireless.

Nevada Bell Wireless and Ronald McDonald House Charities teamed up for the holiday campaign and are expecting to raise more than $100,000 for the Ronald McDonald House, a local charity that provides a "home away from home" for more than 300 families who come to Las Vegas seeking medical treatment for their child.

Students help fight heart disease, stroke

By jump-roping nearly two hours students at Gilbert Elementary Magnet school raised $6,300 to fight heart disease and stroke.

The annual event, called Jump Rope for Heart, promotes cardiovascular fitness and supports the American Heart Association's research and public education programs.

More than 500 students participated in the Oct. 15 event.

City Centre group cancels meeting

The November meeting of the City Centre Development Corp., scheduled for Wednesday, has been canceled due to an anticipated lack of quorum by board members.

The CCDC -- the city's private sector redevelopment arm -- will hold its next public meeting 3 p.m. Dec. 8 in Room 4412 ABC of the Grant Sawyer State Office Building, 555 E. Washington Ave.

Recycling forum to be held Tuesday

A forum, "Buy Recycled: The Real Story About Cost, Availability and Quality" will be from 7:30-11 a.m. Tuesday at the Clark County Government Center, Pueblo Room, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway.

The program will provide tips on reviewing product specifications and testing procedures, setting up cooperative purchasing and exploring the feasibility of closed-loop systems. Call 652-5811.

LV ski club offers passes to members

The United Social & Ski Club of Las Vegas is offering ski tune-up passes and free tanning session passes to new members.

The club is a nonprofit, year-round social club for skiers and nonskiers that organizes trips for skiing, snowboarding and other trips at group rates. Trips are made to areas such as Aspen, Salt Lake City, Lake Tahoe, Elk Meadows and Brianhead.
