Note left in murder-suicide

A note left at the Henderson home of Frank Sherwood told police why he killed his 71-year-old wife at Desert Springs Hospital on Friday, then turned the gun on himself.

Services are pending today for the Sherwood, 68, and his wife, Dorothy Sherwood, who had suffered a massive stroke earlier last week. Davis Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Metro Police said Frank Sherwood, after being told by doctors that his wife had to have a tube stuck down her throat to feed her, went home, got a gun, left a note and returned to the hospital about 1 p.m.

He shot his wife, then killed himself with the same gun, police said.

County building inspector reinstated

Clark County human resource officials are looking today for a suitable job for Marcus McAnally, the building inspection supervisor who was fired in May and reinstated by a hearing officer Friday.

McAnally remained on leave with pay today and will receive about five months of back pay, spokesman Doug Bradford, who did not know McAnally's salary, said.

The hearing officer ruled that all of the charges -- ethical misconduct, alterations and falsification of records, creating a hostile work environment and insubordination -- were terminable.

However, it was ruled the county did not go through all of the proper steps, including counseling, oral and written reprimands and suspension without pay, before firing him.

Bradford said the county must find for McAnally a "position that is suitable to his qualifications." It must be in a supervisory capacity, but not necessarily in building inspections.

Henderson cracks down on alcohol sales

Henderson Police cited 11 businesses for selling alcohol to minors in a sweep just before Halloween.

On Oct. 30 members of the department's explorer program entered 39 Henderson businesses and tried to buy alcohol, getting 11 businesses to sell to a minor.

Police are hoping the citations will educate businesses and eliminate the illegal sale of alcohol to minors, spokesman Charlie Johnson said.

Driver suspected of DUI in accident

Metro Police believe a North Las Vegas man may have been under the influence of a controlled substance when he drove his sport utility vehicle over a curb and killed a man visiting from South Dakota on Sunday.

Walter Baas, 51, was walking with his wife east on the south sidewalk of Tropicana Avenue near Duke Ellington Way when a 1999 Isuzu Rodeo struck him.

The Rodeo, driven by Otis Haley, 25, was headed east on Tropicana, police said.

Baas died at the scene, and Haley was taken to University Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries.

After his release, police arrested him on charges of driving under the influence and of being an ex-felon in possession of a handgun.

The case is still be investigated.

Police seek suspect in sexual assault

Metro Police say they are still looking for one man accused of sexually assaulting a woman early Wednesday.

Police believe the woman was forced into a Ford Escort by two men as she was walking down Tropicana Avenue about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The woman was reportedly driven to a desert lot near Diablo Drive and Giles Street, where she says she was sexually assaulted, robbed and run over by the Escort, police said.

On Thursday the Escort was found in the 3100 block of Burnham Avenue, and the owner of the vehicle, 19-year-old Oscar Campos, has been arrested and charged on one count of robbery.

Detectives are trying to locate a second suspect. Anyone with information can call police at 229-3421.

Henderson teen's condition upgraded

An 18-year-old critically injured when his friend lost control of the car he was riding in Saturday morning has been upgraded to fair condition at University Medical Center.

Robert Benton was the passenger in Adam Deiter's 1995 Nissan on Saturday when Deiter, 19, lost control of the car going around a corner on Sandy Valley Road about 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

The car rolled and struck a berm, throwing Benton from the car, Metro Police said. Benton was taken to UMC. Police say speed and unfamiliarity with the road are probably to blame for the accident.
