Branson contemplates London-themed LV casino

Virgin Atlantic Airlines Chairman Richard Branson is apparently warming to the idea of building a Virgin-branded hotel-casino on the Strip.

The front-runner at this early stage appears to be a London-themed property, just south of the Mandalay Bay.

"That's one of the possibilities ... others have been presented," said Lori Levin, spokeswoman for the British billionaire. "Does he want to get involved in the casino industry? Now that (Virgin Atlantic Airways) is flying there, it's much more viable and interesting to him and the brand."

Branson came to Las Vegas earlier this month to celebrate the initiation of nonstop service between Las Vegas and London by his Virgin airline. During his visit, Branson said he had several meetings scheduled to discuss possible gaming developments, but declined to reveal details.

Speculation is already buzzing about what was pitched to Branson. The Scottish Daily Record said Branson was eyeing a 100 million-pound London-themed property, complete with replicas of the House of Commons and St. Paul's Cathedral. Forbes magazine talked about the possibility of Branson building a Las Vegas casino "attached to an airplane tarmac."

Though denying that any deal is imminent, Levin said there's a grain of truth to both reports, saying that the London theme and the land adjacent to the airport were "the most enticing" of the ideas pitched to Branson.

However, Levin added, Branson probably would not look to build the hotel-casino on his own. Rather, he'd probably contribute the concept and the brand, and partner with a more experienced gaming operator, Levin said.

"We're talking to people we've had previous conversations with, seeing if we want to take it one step further," Levin said. "It's in the very early stages. But if we are to commit, there are a couple of opportunities that could move along very quickly.

"He's very excited about what he saw in Las Vegas. The potential is just staggering. (The south Strip location) is the one that makes the most sense."
